Embracing Autumn: Grounding Practices for Renewal and Wellness

Series: Seasons of the Path [Autumn]. Photography by Jennifer Quezada

As the season changes, so does our energy. Whether you’re enjoying the crisp Midwest air or exploring new places, the allure of autumn is undeniable. There’s something enchanting about watching the leaves transform, grounding ourselves in the present, and welcoming this season as an opportunity for a wellness reset. With nature in transition and the air turning brisk, it’s an ideal time to focus on wellness routines that promote stability, balance, and the release of anything that no longer serves us. Drawing on the grounding energy of all things wellness, we can explore autumn-inspired activities and practices that align with this theme.

This October, I find myself reflecting on the magic of autumn as I travel between two contrasting climates, each with its own unique charm. The beauty of this season lies in its transformative nature, reminding us that change is constant. I watch in awe as the vibrant colors of the leaves shift right before my eyes, each hue a testament to the beauty of evolution. The crispness of the morning and evening air serves as a gentle wake-up call, nudging me back into the reality that with every season comes new beginnings and opportunities for growth. My personal journey of adapting to these changes has inspired this blog post, which I hope will resonate with my readers. Through sharing my insights on wellness and the lessons gleaned from nature’s ever-changing canvas, I aim to inspire others to embrace the magic of transformation and cultivate their own sense of stability amidst life’s beautiful chaos.

🍁✨ Here are some ways to harness autumn’s energy for your well-being:

Wake up with the season: As the days shorten, try rising earlier to align with the natural rhythm of the sun. By syncing your body’s internal clock with daylight, you can improve focus and productivity while creating a sense of harmony with nature. Plus, those early morning moments offer the perfect opportunity to practice mindfulness or start the day with gratitude.

Embracing the season also means nurturing your mornings by dedicating the first hour of your day to being device-free. Studies show that our brains remain in alpha wave patterns upon waking, a state that encourages creativity and relaxation. By avoiding screens during this precious time, you can harness this frequency to set a positive tone for the day. Consider small yet impactful practices, such as brushing your teeth with your non-dominant hand or engaging in mindful breathing, to enhance your neurological functions. These intentional moments of presence not only cultivate mindfulness but also sharpen your cognitive abilities, preparing you to face the day with clarity and focus.

Eat seasonally: Autumn is the perfect time to enjoy grounding foods like root vegetables, pumpkins, and apples. These nutrient-dense ingredients not only fuel your body but also help stabilize your energy during the cooler months. Incorporating seasonal produce into your meals strengthens your connection to the earth and keeps your body balanced as we transition into fall.

They say “great minds think alike,” and this rang true when I shared a cozy dinner with a couple of dear friends one evening. Without even planning it, we both felt drawn to the same idea—a seasonal feast that was simple yet soul-warming. We indulged in a delicious home-cooked meal, savoring a bowl of butternut squash soup that embodied autumn’s flavors. It was a reminder that it’s often the small, shared moments that bring the most joy, especially when they are in perfect harmony with the season.

Seasonal yoga postures & activities : Focus on grounding poses like Mountain Pose and Warrior II to create stability in both body and mind. These asanas help you feel rooted as the winds of change sweep through the season. Add Tree Pose to work on balance and resilience, reflecting on the trees’ ability to stand tall, even as their leaves fall away. Take advantage of nature’s beauty in autumn. Go on mindful walks through parks or forests, allowing yourself to be fully present with the changing colors and crisp air.

To practice Tree Pose (Vrksasana) with hands at heart center, begin by standing tall in Mountain Pose, grounding through both feet. Shift your weight onto your left foot, gently lifting your right foot to place the sole against the inner left thigh or calf—avoid the knee. Find balance, and once steady, bring your hands to prayer position at your heart. Keep your gaze soft and focused on a point in front of you. As you hold this pose, silently repeat the mantra, “I am rooted, yet I rise” to cultivate both stability and growth. In this grounding posture, allow yourself to embody balance, strength, and serenity.

Color therapy: Wearing warm, earthy tones like mustard, burgundy, and burnt orange can evoke feelings of comfort, stability, and warmth, mirroring the rich hues of the season. These colors naturally resonate with the energy of autumn, grounding us and promoting emotional balance. By mindfully selecting colors that reflect the season’s palette, you can create a deeper connection to the present moment and enhance your overall sense of well-being throughout the day.

Incorporating seasonal colors into your wardrobe doesn’t mean you have to shop new; in fact, sustainable fashion offers a mindful way to embrace both style and environmental consciousness. A mustard yellow cardigan, like the cozy knitwear currently available on Poshmark, is a perfect example of how online thrift shopping supports sustainability. With the fashion industry responsible for 10% of global carbon emissions annually, fast fashion’s environmental toll cannot be ignored. By choosing secondhand items and reducing the demand for new, fast-fashion pieces, we can collectively lower this footprint. Online thrift platforms are the future, offering fashionable finds while encouraging more eco-conscious consumer habits. Through mindful choices, we support a cycle of reuse and reduce waste, all while staying stylish and grounded in the season’s hues.

Mudras for grounding: Mudras offer a subtle yet profound way to connect with the energy around and within us, enhancing our sense of grounding and stability. There are countless mudras, each aligned with different energies and intentions, providing endless opportunities to practice throughout the day. Whether in meditation, during a yoga session, or simply in moments of reflection, you can intuitively choose the mudra that resonates with your current state. Prithvi Mudra (Prit-VEE Moo-Drah), for instance, symbolizes the earth element and can be a powerful tool for grounding, fostering inner strength, and creating a deep sense of balance. Trust your instincts, listen to your heart, and allow these ancient gestures to guide you in alignment with the present moment.

To practice Prithvi Mudra, begin by sitting comfortably in a quiet space, allowing yourself to settle into a state of calm. Gently bring the tip of your ring finger to meet the tip of your thumb, while extending the other three fingers softly outward. This gesture, representing the earth element, helps ground your energy and cultivate a sense of stability and inner strength. Hold the mudra as you breathe deeply, letting it guide you into a deeper connection with the earth beneath you. Whether during meditation, yoga, or moments of stillness, this simple yet powerful practice invites balance and resilience. For a visual reference, see the photo below as a guide.

Shedding layers, inside and out: Autumn embodies the essence of releasing the old to welcome the new. My annual chemical peel serves as a personal ritual of rejuvenation, mirroring the trees as they shed their leaves. This practice is both symbolic and tangible—a way to let go of what no longer serves me. Through self-care and beauty routines like this, I embrace the concept of renewal, allowing me to radiate wellness from the inside out.

To complete your wellness reset this fall, I highly recommend one of my favorite skincare products of 2024—the Mota Magick Face oil. It’s perfect for rejuvenating tired skin, and there’s something for everyone, whether you’re pampering your feet or grooming a beautiful beard.
